Laurel Perweiler from the University of Central Florida shares Advisor Advice for Fall 2022.
Laurel reflects on the rewards from working in student programming: The most rewarding part of my job is seeing my student’s development from when they get hired to the end of the academic year. Watching student leaders grow in professionalism, confidence, and organization is so rewarding.
Laurel’s advice for new advisors: My biggest advice to new advisors is just be yourself, as cliché as it sounds. Learn what your boundaries are when it comes to sharing your interests and personal life. I find that my students respond best when I show that I am a person and not just their “supervisor/advisor”.
