Returning Programmers: Taylor Sarlo

Taylor currently serves as the Center Stage Committee Director for JMU’s University Program Board. She previously held the position of Committee Communications Chair. UPB has taught Taylor all about teamwork, read more here:

Why did you join your program board?
I joined the program board as a freshman because I wanted to make friends and experience something new. I attended UPB’s programs during my first few months as a freshman, and I had the best time and felt so welcomed to the school. I wanted to help create that environment for other students, and take my good experience and pay it forward.

What has been your greatest takeaway from student involvement so far?
One of my greatest takeaways has been importance of teamwork. As a program board, we want to create events that many students want to attend, so having a variety of opinions and ideas during the planning stages is vital. It’s not always easy working in a group with diverse ideas, but I’ve learned that it’s this diversity that helps us create the best outcomes.

What are you most looking forward to this Fall?
In regards to programming, I am definitely most excited to begin work on our fall concert with my committee! The Center Stage committee is in charge of the large scale concerts we bring to campus, and I am so excited and honored to be heading the committee. But, if we aren’t talking about programming, I’m most excited for JMU’s new dining hall to open.

What is your advice for new student programmers?
Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there! Some of the best ideas come from crazy or outrageous suggestions. Students will appreciate new and exciting programs, so get creative and have fun with it! Programming is the best job/club ever, and if you put a lot into it, you’ll get a lot out of it.

Which performer or comedian do you expect to be popular on college campuses this Fall? Why?
Oh gosh, I have no idea. There are so many great up and comers in music right now, and I’m not sure exactly what the musical tastes of other schools might be! But artists like Billie Eilish, St. Lucia, Jukebox the Ghost, and Léon are some great ones.
