Advisor Advice: Mo Ferreras

Mo Ferreras from Syracuse University shares Advisor Advice for Fall 2024.

What are you up to this summer?
Planning our annual fall concert, Juice Jam.

What is your favorite part about your job?
Working with students and seeing the results of all their efforts and commitment to their events.

What is one event that takes place on your campus that is either really unique or really memorable?
Juice Jam and Block Party.

Who/ what are you listening to, reading, or watching right now?
I listen to Drake, Rod Wave, Bad Bunny and Playboi Carti. I am currently watching The Bear, Power, Bridgerton and The Boys.

When it comes to working with this current generation of students, what advice do you have for fellow advisors?
Be patient and try to listen the music of the artist they mention to help understand them better.

What advice do you have for new advisors and professionals as they step into their busy fall semester?
Rely on your team for help and take breaks even if you think you can’t.

What advice do you have for new student programmers who are stepping into their roles in the fall for the first time?
Think outside the box and don’t be afraid to try new things and bring new performers to campus. Lastly, think about the folks that aren’t attending your events and try to determine what will draw them to your events. We are quick to only cater to audiences that always show up but we need to think about those that don’t and figure out why. This is when you try new things and see if it works.

What advice do you have for our experienced student leaders that are coming back for the fall in more senior leadership roles and have experience programming events/ leading their peers?
Don’t be afraid of failure or as I like to call it, setbacks. While doing things like “how it’s always been done” helps, you won’t stand out or have memorable experiences if you don’t try something new.

After months of planning, it’s finally event and show day! What’s your one absolute most important Babco show tip to share with our readers?
Please please please rely on the Babco team to help and have those difficult conversations. Don’t be afraid to tell the artist and their teams NO, I know the Babco team won’t mind telling them for you.
