Sydney Nomura from Chapman University shares Advisor Advice for Fall 2024.
What is your favorite part about your job?
Watching students grow while planning their event is my favorite part of my job. They come to me with an idea (and sometimes that’s it!) and overtime their idea comes to fruition – and they’re always so excited throughout the event planning process. It’s such a rewarding experience all around!
What advice do you have for new advisors and professionals as they step into their busy fall semester?
We’re all busy, but make sure you take some time out of your day to check out the events! Not only do the students appreciate seeing you there, but it’s also so rewarding to see the event itself and how excited the students are throughout it! Plus, it’s a chance to step away from your desk and get some fresh air 🙂
What advice do you have for new student programmers who are stepping into their roles in the fall for the first time?
Make the most of your time in this role, and make it your own! Although it’s great to learn from our predecessors, you don’t need to do exactly what they did. If you have a new idea, don’t be afraid to share it and see where it goes!
After months of planning, it’s finally event and show day! What’s your one absolute most important Babco show tip to share with our readers?
Print out copies of important documents! Our phones are only so reliable, and sometimes it’s just easier to have physical copies of the advance details, run of show, etc.
