Richard Kershaw from Middle Tennessee State University shares Advisor Advice for Fall 2024.
What are you up to this summer?
New Student Orientation and Planning for Fall.
What is your favorite part about your job?
Working with Students!!
What is one event that takes place on your campus that is either really unique or really memorable?
The Signature Events Spring Concert. This is a large scale concert held in our Basketball Arena. The last three artists who performed were Jack Harlow, Phoebe Bridgers, and Khalid.
Who/ what are you listening to, reading, or watching right now?
I mostly listen to 80’s rock, especially Metallica and AC/DC. I enjoy watching Hallmark
Christmas Movies in July, British Baking Championship, and House Hunters International.
When it comes to working with this current generation of students, what advice do you have for fellow advisors?
Always be up front with your students, even if it is hard to hear. They will know if you are not telling them the whole story. They will always surprise you with their abilities to take the information, process it, and act on it.
What advice do you have for new advisors and professionals as they step into their busy fall semester?
Teach your students to challenge the process, and then don’t be surprised when they challenge you.
What advice do you have for new student programmers who are stepping into their roles in the fall for the first time?
Ask yourself the following questions and your event will go well; Who/What event do you want to bring? Why do you want to bring it? What will it take to bring it? Where is the target location of the event? How much will it cost? Most importantly, have fun!
What advice do you have for our experienced student leaders that are coming back for the fall in more senior leadership roles and have experience programming events/ leading their peers?
Remember, you were once the new member on the team. Help your new team members to transition, and show up to support their events. Have fun, because if you are not having fun, why are you doing it!
After months of planning, it’s finally event and show day! What’s your one absolute most important Babco show tip to share with our readers?
Follow your day of schedule, but be prepared to pivot when something may need adjusting. Trust that Babco and Melissa Boyle Aronson have your back!!
