Artist Spotlight: Oscar’s 2026

Congratulations to all of the winners and nominees of last week’s 98th annual Oscar Awards! Check out highlights with a nod to Women’s History Month and access the full list below.

As we celebrate Women’s History Month, we have to highlight history in the making! This past weekend,  Autumn Durald Arkapaw made history as she became the first woman ever to win the Academy Award for Best Cinematography. Arkapaw is the fourth woman to have ever been nominated, and the first woman of color to be nominated. The award is for her work on the 2025 film Sinners. Sinners marks a major milestone as the first film shot by a female cinematographer using IMAX 65mm film cameras and 65mm large-format film. Arkapaw has worked on many projects including The Last Showgirl (2024), Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022) as well as other movies, music videos, commercials, and documentaries for many major Directors, Artists and brands. The Oscars has been around to recognize and celebrate artistry and innovation in filmmaking, and excellence in cinematic achievements since 1929. This is a major win in film and cinema history.

The night highlighted other wins for Women such as Jessie Buckley for Best Actress in Hamnet and Amy Madigan for Best Supporting Actress in Weapons. Check out the full list of nominees and winners here.

WHAT CAN YOU DO WITH THIS INFORMATION?
Think about how you can start dialogue on campus. What themes you can pull from the event and speeches? From the films?  It’s always good to stay on top of such news so that you can seize the opportunity to provide spaces for students to come together and share perspectives. The 2026 theme of the Oscar’s was “Human Touch,” intended to emphasize human connection and actual intelligence over AI – something to consider when thinking about putting events together. Perhaps an event watch party, or a pre/post party forum to share thoughts and predictions. There’s always a way to have fun and build conversation and community.

Check out AUTUMN DURALD ARKAPAW’s acceptance speech during the 2026 award ceremony. The nominees for this category can be heard during this clip from the 98th Oscar Awards below. Call 757.962.8777 for information and ideas for your events.
