We are celebrating Women’s History Month by acknowledging Women in leadership. Here’s advice from Jeanine Ortiz, from University of Miami.
What is your favorite quote and why? How has this message contributed to your female
experience?
“Fairytales can come true. But you gotta make ’em happen. It all depends on you!”
This quote is from Disney’s Princess and the Frog (2009) when Tiana sings “Almost There”. This quote/song resonated with me because it reflects the power of perseverance and hard work. The journey to our dreams often comes with challenges, but those experiences help shape who we become. As women, every step we take toward our goals not only moves us closer to our own dreams, but also helps break barriers and create space for other women to pursue theirs.
As a woman in a leadership position on your campus, what advice do you have for any students or peers that identify as or are seeking to be a woman in leadership?
My advice for women pursuing leadership is to prioritize your mental health. How you care for yourself shapes how you show up for your team and the students you serve. Self-care and spaces like therapy can help you build self-awareness and emotional intelligence. When you understand yourself, you learn to lead with empathy. Empathy is one of the most powerful skills any leader can have.
